Accessible Mental Health Care for Underserved Communities
By The Heriford House Counseling Center
At The Heriford House Counseling Center, we believe mental health care should be accessible, inclusive, and responsive to real-life challenges—especially for underserved communities. Too often, families face barriers like limited access to providers, stigma, and logistical hurdles that make getting support feel overwhelming. Our mission is to reduce those barriers and help people get the care they deserve.
Why Access to Mental Health Care Matters
Underserved communities often experience overlapping stressors, including economic hardship, systemic inequities, school challenges, and justice involvement. When support is delayed or unavailable, concerns like anxiety, depression, family conflict, truancy, and behavioral challenges can escalate.
Early, accessible mental health care can make a meaningful difference—supporting stability, strengthening relationships, and helping families build skills that last.
Access to care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for healthy families and strong communities.
How We Support Families at The Heriford House
We intentionally design our services to be approachable and flexible, with a strong focus on meeting people where they are.
Our services include:
- No Family Left Behind (NFLB) – an intensive, short-term family-based program that supports youth and families navigating truancy, academic challenges, justice involvement, and serious emotional or behavioral concerns
- Virtual (telehealth) therapy services for individuals, children, adolescents, and families
- Collaboration with schools, courts, and community organizations to provide coordinated, wraparound support
Our clinicians focus on identifying strengths, building practical coping and communication skills, and supporting long-term, sustainable change.
A Welcoming, Inclusive Approach
The Heriford House Counseling Center is a welcoming and affirming space for individuals and families of all backgrounds. We are especially committed to serving minority and underserved populations through culturally responsive care that honors each client’s lived experience.
We believe feeling seen, heard, and respected is foundational to healing—and we strive to reflect that belief in every interaction.
Working Together With Our Community
Strong communities are built through collaboration. We value partnerships with schools, referral sources, nonprofit organizations, and community agencies that share our commitment to equity and access.
Community collaboration helps:
- Reduce service gaps
- Improve continuity of care
- Increase awareness of mental health resources
- Strengthen outcomes for youth and families
