Self-Harm Awareness Month:
March is Self-Harm Awareness Month, a time to gently bring understanding to a topic that is often surrounded by silence and stigma. At The Heriford House Counseling Center, we want individuals and families to know that struggles with self-harm are met here with compassion, patience, and care. Emotional pain can feel overwhelming, and for some, self-harm becomes a way to cope with feelings that are difficult to express or manage. It is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign that someone is hurting and in need of support.
If you or someone you love is struggling, please know that you are not alone. Healing begins when people feel safe enough to be seen, heard, and supported without judgment. With understanding, healthy coping strategies, and strong therapeutic relationships, individuals can learn new ways to manage intense emotions and move toward healing and hope.
Support from loved ones can make a meaningful difference. Listening with empathy, remaining calm and nonjudgmental, and encouraging professional support in a gentle way can help someone feel less isolated in their pain. Small moments of kindness and reassurance can remind individuals that their lives and feelings truly matter.
Therapy can provide a safe, supportive space to build emotional regulation skills, process difficult experiences, strengthen communication, and develop healthier ways to cope. At The Heriford House Counseling Center, we are committed to providing warm, culturally responsive care for individuals and families, including those from underserved communities who may face additional barriers to mental health support. Through tele-health services, we strive to create a welcoming environment where healing can begin at each person’s own pace.
If you are in immediate danger or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or seek emergency care right away. If you would like support or want to learn more about our services, please contact The Heriford House Counseling Center at 573-639-1094.
